This Day in Yukon History

Nugget Express has built big following

August 8, 1899 – “The Nugget Express, which had its foundation in Dawson during the winter just passed, has opened headquarters in Seattle at 112 Yesler Way.

The origin and growth of this company is at once unique and interesting. The Klondike Nugget, published at Dawson, has from its inception been the persistent and constant opponent of the administration of government affairs in the Yukon territory in fighting official corruption and battling for the rights of the miners.

Through this steadfast and fearless policy a very large circulation has been built up upon the creeks of that vicinity, so great being the demand for the vigorous little sheet that delivery at the cabins of claim owners upon the creeks and benches became an imperative necessity.

From this necessity grew the delivery of the mail with the paper, and from that the establishment of dog teams until 65 dogs and nine drivers were required all winter to handle the merchandise.

Uniformed messengers accompany each departure of the Nugget Express between Dawson and Seattle.

Information concerning anything ‘inside’ is cheerfully given and the public is invited to step into the spacious offices of the Nugget Express and make any inquiries they may desire at any time.”
