August 23, 1961 – “Fraser and Rice Construction Ltd. of Edmonton has been awarded a $261,626 contract for construction of a bridge over the Klondike River in Yukon. The announcement was made by Erik Nielsen, MP for the Yukon, on behalf of David J. Walker, federal minister of public works.
The bid by the Edmonton firm was the lowest of five received, the highest being $297,556. Completion of the bridge is set for early 1962.
It will be built at the start of the Flat Creek to Eagle Plain Road, which branches off from the Whitehorse to Dawson road.
The length of the bridge will be 406 feet, of structural steel consisting of three 120-foot spans. The roadway will be 14 feet wide.”

Over the next 18 years, the Flat Creek to Eagle Plains Road was extended to Inuvik. Named the Dempster Highway in 1964, it was officially opened on August 18, 1979, at Flat Creek.
