Heroic efforts saved city from fire destruction
June 3, 1921 – “Sunday afternoon, the shrieking of the local fire whistle summoned all to the White Pass hotel, where fire had been discovered. At first it was not considered very serious, as only a little smoke was visible, but in a few minutes the fire had spread all over the south side of the building and all realized that a very serious fire was under way. Four lines of hose played on the building from all sides and everyone in town was there to assist as it was realized by all that should the White Pass go the north side of town was in great danger. Dense smoke filled the interior of the hotel and made fire fighting inside practically impossible. It was no time until the fire reached the attic and then it was seen that the only way to save the building would be to flood it from the top. Fire Chief Joe Bingham directed the firemen and citizens and two lines of hose were soon pouring water into the building from the roof. This finally overcame the flames and the town was saved.”
