Governor-General toured Yukon with zest

August 12, 1922

“DAWSON CITY, Y.T., Aug. 12. – Concluding a busy fortnight in The Yukon, His Excellency the Governor-General is en route to Skagway to take ship for Vancouver, en route to Ottawa.

The governor-general has been in Mayo silver camp for a week, while Lady Byng and Lady Margaret Boscawen remained in Dawson. Lord Byng entered with zest into the frontier life of Mayo and Keno Hill. He went down into the mines and came back laden with gold nuggets and similar souvenirs. He dined with the miners and was made an honorary member of the Yukon Order of Pioneers.

While in Dawson the vice-regal party was visited at government house by Chief Isaac Montezuma, who once owned the Yukon before the white man came. Chief Isaac came in the

costume of his ancient state and his retinue carried caribou and moose skins to present to the governor-general. These form a bulky part of the trophies of Lord Byng’s first tour of Canada.”
