Convicted thief pardoned, leaves the region
June 6, 1902 – “Mrs. Mansen, who was convicted last fall of the theft of a sack of gold dust from St. Mary’s hospital, where she was employed as nurse, and sentenced last September for a term of one year, was pardoned Wednesday and left for the outside.
It will be remembered that a man named Cantin was taken to the hospital for treatment. He had considerable dust and his two friends, Morrill and Malle, turned the money over to the sister superior for safe keeping. The sister put it under the mattress, but when it was looked for later could not be found. Suspicion fell on Mrs. Mansen and she was arrested. She was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment. Since being incarcerated she has steadily been failing, and a communication to Ottawa for her pardon brought the response that it would be given, providing the woman left the country. She was released on Wednesday just in time to catch the steamer.”
