Town square concept returns for second summer

The Riverfront Town Square held the first Market Day on Tuesday on Front Street in downtown Whitehorse.

“The Riverfront Town Square is pedestrian-oriented and located in the heart of downtown Whitehorse,” the city said in a statement.

“Every Tuesday and Saturday, the riverfront and wharf will transform into a vibrant hub for people to eat, drink, socialize and shop. This area will be programmed for a market, concerts and artist workshops to activate the waterfront and draw people towards the downtown core.”

In the summer of 2023, Main Street between Front Street and Second Avenue was closed to traffic, and the square was placed there.

However, some area merchants, particularly those with premises in the Horwood’s Mall, complained about a lack of consultation about that plan. Some also said they found the elimination of traffic from that block and the associated loss of metered parking spaces negatively affected their sales.
