The Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition will be held this week in Whitehorse. It will mark the first time the national fiddle contest will be held in the North.
It’s also the first time youth fiddlers from across the North will have the chance to learn, share and perform together as part of the Pan-Northern Youth Fiddle Summit.
The Grand Masters event has played a major role in the Canadian fiddling landscape for the past 30 years. The event will bring top fiddlers from across Canada to perform on the Yukon Art Centre stage.
The competition is held annually at the end of August. Approximately 35 fiddlers from across Canada are invited to compete for the title of Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Champion.
The competition was developed to promote and preserve Canadian traditional fiddling and provide national recognition to top Canadian fiddlers.
It has been a launching pad for prominent Canadian musicians and Canadian fiddle groups, including Juno Award winners, Canadian Folk Music Award winners and international recording and touring artists.
