After a massive avalanche earlier this week, the South Klondike Highway has reopened on a limited basis.
According to an update from the Department of Highways and Public Works, “the South Klondike Highway is open today between 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to single-lane, piloted traffic. Please drive to conditions and follow posted signs.”
The road had been closed due to a 20-metre-high landslide near the Conrad Campground south of Carcross.
The closure left upward of 200 tourists from the Skagway area stranded on the Yukon side of the border. They have since been moved via the White Pass railway and buses to Haines, Alaska.
Another update was planned for 4 p.m today.
Meanwhile, the Alaska Highway near Toad River continues to be open to alternating lanes of traffic, according to the latest information on flooding that washed out part of the road.
As well, late Thursday afternoon, the Yukon government reopened the Annie Lake Road south of Whitehorse, as flood waters have begun to recede.
