Multiple charges laid in relation to prohibited firearm

Two people face a variety of charges linked to a prohibited weapon and “aggressive” attempts to flee from RCMP officers.

At Robert Service Campground at around 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said today, officers spotted a truck that had previously fled from police-initiated traffic stops. At the same time, the officers saw two people in the front seats using illegal drugs, and a third person in the vehicle.

“While the male driver was outside the vehicle, police approached, activated their emergency lights, and blocked the suspect vehicle,” police said.

“As the officers were advancing towards the suspect vehicle, (the driver) re-entered the vehicle in the driver’s seat, started the truck and revved the engine.

“With concern for safety and in effort to prevent the driver from driving away, officers smashed out the driver and passenger windows, told the male he was under arrest, and attempted to remove him from the vehicle.”

The driver, police said, “put the vehicle in gear, accelerated into the police vehicle, pushed past it and escaped, driving aggressively.”

Officers did not pursue the vehicle at that time.

Police once again saw the driver leaving the suspect vehicle at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a gas station on McIntyre Drive. As an officer was trying to arrest him, the driver attempted to flee again on foot, but failed, thanks to the assistance of another officer

During the driver’s arrest, the female passenger tried to leave the vehicle but was stopped and arrested as well.

Police identified the driver as Joseph (Joey) Donald Allison, 35. He was travelling with Ashley Patricia Schultz, 33.

“A search of the vehicle located a prohibited modified shotgun in the driver’s footwell of the vehicle,” police said.

“Both Mr. Allison and Ms. Schultz were held for court, and are facing numerous motor vehicle and firearms-related (charges).”

Both have been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon without having a licence, and being an occupant in a vehicle while knowing it contained a prohibited firearm.

Allison was also charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, breaching a probation order, and possession of a prohibited firearm while prohibited.

Other charges related to alleged offences committed Tuesday. Those include dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while prohibited, breaching a probation order, and failing to stop for police while driving a vehicle.

Schultz was also charged with failing to stop for police while driving a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of a prohibited firearm and breaching a probation order.

The police officer sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

Allison had his second court appearance Thursday, with the next one set for Aug. 2.

Schultz appeared in court Thursday and was released on conditions, including having no contact with Allison and not using firearms. Her next appearance will be Aug. 7.
