Planters renew garden honouring residential school survivors

The sixth annual planting of the Heart Garden at the Whitehorse RCMP detachment took place Tuesday.

On Aug. 13, 2019, the RCMP dedicated the heart garden to the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation, in honour of all residential school survivors and their families.

The healing heart-shaped garden planting is now a special annual collaboration among the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and the RCMP.

“Working together planting the flowers represents our shared commitment to reconciliation,” said Staff-Sgt. Jill McLaren.

“We are grateful to be able to continue to walk this path together. A heartfelt thank you to all who participated!”

Rain failed to hinder Tuesday’s annual planting of the Reconciliation Garden.

Ta’an Kwäch’än Council Chief Amanda Leas and heritage co-ordinator Debbie Burns attended this year’s planting. “We look forward to enjoying the beautiful blooms this garden will bring throughout the summer!” they said.
