Yukon Wildfire Management officials have updated the wildfire situation for the territory during a period that has seen off-and-on closures of the North Klondike Highway in the Pelly Crossing-Stewart Crossing area.
As of this afternoon the highway between Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing is closed once again.
According to the latest update on social media and the Internet at mid-day today, “The status of the Rudolph Gulch fire (MA-004) has changed from out of control to being held. This means that with current resources and weather, the fire is not expected to spread beyond existing boundaries.
“Crews, aircraft and heavy equipment have been working hard to extinguish the perimeter of this fire. They will now work inward from the outside edge, identifying and extinguishing hotspots.”
The evacuation alert for the area is still in place for now.
Yukon Wildfire Management spokesperson Mike Fancie said today, “The North Klondike Highway is impacted by two fires, MA-006 and Ma-005, between Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing.
“The Mt. Lewis fire (XY-008) is located in the wilderness zone north of Lake Laberge. Because of its location on a mountain, it is highly visible to boaters and residents, but is not currently threatening any values.”
