New wildfire called under control

A new wildfire in southern Yukon is well in hand.

“Two initial attack crews are responding to a suspected lightning-caused fire located south of the Alaska Highway near the Champagne access road,” Yukon Wildland Fire Management officials said in a statement.

“This fire is now under control. Low fire danger conditions helped crews respond and quickly contain the fire.”

Meanwhile, the wildfire evacuation alert for the Mayo-Stewart Crossing region was lifted on Friday. The Wrong Lake fire (MA-006) was declared “being held” on July 7.

Prescribed burning is planned for areas south of Stewart Crossing and in the Whitehorse South Fuel Break. Burning will not take place now due to unfavourable weather conditions in both areas. Hot weather is forecast for central and northern Yukon over the next couple of days.
