MP coy on running again, support for Trudeau

Yukon MP Brendan Hanley isn’t letting out any hints on his political future – and won’t say if he thinks the Liberal Party needs new leadership.

“I’ll be respecting the decision that he (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) makes,” Hanley said Wednesday at an unrelated news conference in Whitehorse.

“We have a lot of work to do,” the first-term MP added. “We have a lot of work to do together. We’re taking changes very seriously.”

As to whether he will run again in the 2025 election, Hanley said he guesses he is until he says he’s not.

Hanley was the Yukon’s chief medical officer of health for several years before seeking election in 2021.

Notably, he was in charge when the COVID-19 pandemic caused havoc in the territory, and his position greatly enhanced his public profile.

Trudeau, who became Liberal leader in 2013, insists he will lead his party into the next election, but some Liberals are calling for a change in leadership.
