The fire danger in the Yukon continues to decline, even as more forest fires are popping up.
According to the latest update from Yukon Wildland Fire Management, less severe weather continues to enable wildfire crews to work more directly on active fires. Normal burning rules apply for all Yukon regions.
“The Wrong Lake fire (MA-006) is burning near the North Klondike Highway between Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. An evacuation alert remains in place for Stewart Crossing. Check Yukon 511 to see the latest highway information,” officials said.
“Two wilderness fires (TE-004 and XY-010) may be visible from the Alaska Highway and Whitehorse. TE-004 is approximately 400 hectares and was first reported on July 1. The fire is located 62 kilometres northeast of Teslin and could generate smoky conditions on the Teslin River.
“XY-010 was reported June 28 and is approximately 1,996 hectares. This wilderness fire is located 56 kilometres east of Whitehorse.”
Both fires have been assessed within the past day and do not pose a threat to any communities. They may be intermittently visible from the Alaska Highway and Whitehorse depending on fire conditions.
Travel advisories have been rescinded for all roads in the Mayo area, including the Silver Trail, and Frenchman Lake Road.
The North Klondike Highway from Pelly Crossing to Stewart Crossing remains under a travel advisory after having been reopened last week.
“Use caution while travelling through this area, as smoke could affect visibility,” officials said.
Evacuation alerts remain in place for Stewart Crossing and the North Klondike Highway from Km 522 to 538 while the evacuation alert for Mayo and surrounding areas was rescinded last week.
Fire restrictions were lifted for all regions at 2 p.m. Friday.
“Wildland fire crews have made progress containing priority fires across the Yukon, helped by decreased fire behaviour and cooler, wetter conditions,” officials said.
“As a result, the level 2 fire restriction put in place on June 27 for the Beaver Creek, Haines Junction, Carmacks, Ross River, Dawson, Mayo and Old Crow fire districts has been lifted.”
