There is as yet no cause being provided by ATCO Electric Yukon for a series of power outages over the past several days.
The most recent failure was Sunday morning, when downtown Whitehorse and many of the surrounding neighbourhoods lost their power. Many of the businesses in the area were affected, including such major stores as Walmart and the Real Canadian Superstore.
ATCO provided a series of updates on the situation on social media – but provided no cause. While the company was quiet, its customers were not, particularly on social media.
One of the first comments was scathing: “Three days in a row right after we all paid surprise outrageous bills 2 months ago.”
Another person wrote: “Yukon’s worst decision was letting ATCO move into the region. Did they not see the amount of outages and terrible maintenance they supply in Alberta.”
A third person posted: “After all these crises are attended to could ATCO please provide some info about the reasons? ATCO customers are being kept ‘in the dark’ about these various power failures; the last bit of info we were provided was when a blow-down tree on Summit Rd. took down a line a few weeks back and even then we had to rely on the Mayo Road gossip page to disclose what happened in a timely manner. Please be transparent and informative, thanks in advance!”
Another person suggested: “Think a credit is due to the frequent interrupted service. Would be much better if your organization dropped the rider. Customers should not be responsible for your budgetary shortfall.”
ATCO officials did not respond this morning to The Yukon Star’s request for a comment on the string of power failures.
