Filipino community celebrates rich history, culture

The Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon presented the Pinoy FiestAcular 2024 last weekend at Rotary Peace Park.

Members celebrated Santacruzan for the first time, with the parade of arches honouring the finding of the True Cross by Helena of Constantinople.

This festival is normally part of the Flores de Mayo, held in May, and Santacruzan is held on the last day of Flores de Mayo.

“It’s just like back home,” said one of the attendees.

The parade of the arches was used as a fundraiser for Our Lady of Victory Church in Porter Creek, and more than $20,000 was raised.

“This afternoon, as we gather, we are honouring the Virgin Mary and to re-enact the search for a true cause,” said association president Dominic Pelayo.

“Through this festive celebration, we showcase the richness of our Filipino culture, the vibrance of our community and the depth of our devotion.”
