Dempster Highway fuel spill cleanup continues

Yukon government officials say they’re still investigating a fuel spill that occurred last Thursday on the Dempster Highway.

“On the afternoon of July 18, Environment officials received a report of a spill on the Dempster Highway, caused by a super B transport truck rollover,” a  spokesperson for Environment Yukon told The Yukon Star in a statement Monday afternoon.

“The truck rolled into a channel that is part of the Blackstone River, near km 141. No fatalities were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.”

Steps were immediately taken to confine the spill.

“Environment officials understand that the truck was carrying calcium chloride,” the statement added.

“It is still unclear if calcium chloride was spilled into the Blackstone River. Some petroleum products from the unit’s engine and tanks did spill into the Blackstone River, and the volume of the spilled products is yet to be confirmed.”

Environment officials worked with the responsible party and their independent environmental consultant to remove the truck last Saturday.

“The truck unit was recovered, and the cargo trailer was moved away from the river channel,” the statement said.

“Anyone responsible for a spill is legally obligated to take all reasonable measures to confine, repair and remedy the effects of the spill, and remove the substance spilled to reduce the danger to human health and the environment.”

The Department of Environment is working with the responsible party and their consultant on finalizing recovery and beginning delineation and remediation of the spill.

“We are still collecting information and assessing the risk to inform a longer-term response.”
