Victim of Haines Junction plane crash identified

The victim of last Monday’s fatal plane crash in Haines Junction has been identified.

A Quebec man, 68-year-old Jean-Jacques Gemme, was a passenger, Heather Jones, the Yukon’s chief coroner, said Wednesday.

“The Cessna U206 aircraft was operating commercially and was returning following a sight-seeing flight in the Haines Junction area,” Jones said.

“Mr. Gemme had left Quebec on May 4 and had been travelling with his partner through the western United States and Canada. The couple was going to Alaska when they stopped in Haines Junction on June 10.”

The investigation into the fatal incident is continuing with the assistance of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Haines Junction detachment of the RCMP.

Haines Junction police officers responded to a report of a small aircraft that had crashed at the village’s airport at about 1:52 p.m. Monday. A pilot and five passengers were aboard.

“Along with police officers, Emergency Medical Services, including air ambulance, airport personnel and the Haines Junction Fire Department, were all part of the response,” Jones said.

“Yukon Coroner’s Service was notified shortly after 2 p.m., when a death was confirmed at the scene.”
