Long-running school investigation results in no charges

There will be no charges laid after the conclusion of a long-running investigation at Jack Hulland Elementary School.

This afternoon, the Whitehorse RCMP announced the conclusion of the probe into alleged illegal restraints by school staff on students, and the improper use of isolation techniques at the school.

“The Whitehorse RCMP General Investigation Section have concluded the investigation into allegations related to use of holds and isolation spaces at Jack Hulland Elementary School,” the RCMP stated.

“As a result of the investigation, the RCMP have concluded on the entirety of the evidence that was collected, that no criminal charges will be laid in this matter.”

Police say the Jack Hulland Elementary School community was “updated by means of a letter distributed through the school’s communication channels today.

“Victim Services has been engaged from the start of the investigation and has been updated in order to continue to offer support. Investigating officers have provided updates to individuals involved.”

The RCMP added that “no further commentary will be provided in this case due to other ongoing judicial processes.”

The investigation began on Nov. 19, 2021, when the RCMP were made aware of the concerns over the use of restraint holds and isolation spaces at the school in Porter Creek.

Since then, multiple parents filed lawsuits against the Yukon government over the issue.
