The victim of last Thursday’s hit-and-run collision last week on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse has been identified.
Social media posts over the weekend identify the cyclist as Joe Morrison, a teacher who taught at Holy Family Elementary School in Porter Creek.
The accident occurred during the morning commute in Rabbit’s Foot Canyon.
A tribute to Morrison posted on a local soccer Facebook page speaks highly of him.
“Really sad news our friend and former player Joe Morrison passed away this morning. He was hit by a truck as he was cycling to work yesterday. Everyone who knew Joe will remember his unique style of play, he was a true gent, a genuinely kind person who will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his wife and their three children at this terrible time.”
Ted Hupé, the president of the Yukon Association of Education Professionals, also confirmed the identity of the victim.
He told the Star he had known Morrison for years, but said he wanted to consult with the family before saying anything more publicly.
One person replying to the post from Facebook said, “Joe also reffed and coached youth recreational teams. Truly a big loss.”
Another said, “This is very tragic news. Joe was a great guy and always a great teammate. He was a good man.”
A third said, “His loss is immeasurable, and our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
The RCMP did not respond to a request from The Yukon Star for an update on the situation this morning. They have located the car involved in the hit-and-run but have not reported finding the driver.
A celebration of Morrison’s life will be held in August.
