The installation of a UV light interim treatment system at the Selkirk Water Treatment Plant will likely take place sooner than planned.
On Monday evening, city council passed first and second readings of a bylaw amending the 2024-2027 capital expenditure program.
This amendment increases the 2024 capital budget and decreases the 2025 provisional budget by $3 million for the upgrade to the plant.
The project was prompted by data collected over the past few years. They showed significant changes in water quality, such as the presence of iron micro-particulates and variations in groundwater level and temperature. The upgrade will help the city meet the environmental standards set by the territorial government.
“This is right at the very heart of what we do,” said Coun. Kirk Cameron.
The expenditure is necessary and justified, he added.
“My support is fully behind this proceeding.”
