One of Whitehorse’s star hockey players continued to shine in his Hlinka Gretzky Cup debut.
Gavin McKenna scored a goal and two assists to spark Canada to an early lead in a decisive 10-0 victory over Switzerland Monday evening in Edmonton.
McKenna assisted on the opening goal and sniped a bar-down power-play marker to put Canada up 2-0 in the first period.
He added a third period assist on a setup in the slot to Cole Reschny, who tallied five points (two goals and three assists) on the night.
Team Canada captain Matthew Schaefer, who scored two goals and added an assist, was named Team Canada’s Player of the Game.
Schaefer said the great start was a key to the victory.
“Guys were buzzing tonight. We started hot out of the gate and kept it up through all three periods.”
Quinn Beauchesne also had a goal and two assists.
McKenna generated numerous scoring chances for Canada throughout the game.
He also unveiled what appeared to be a “Superman” celebration after his first period goal, imitating former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s celebration mimicking Superman pulling his shirt apart.
Canada outshot Switzerland 50-20.
Goaltender Jack Ivankovic was solid in the Canadian net, coming up with big saves when he had to in earning the shutout.
Canada is right back in action tonight against Slovakia at the Rogers Centre in Edmonton at 6:30 p.m. Yukon time.
The game is televised on TSN and RDS.
