Elections Yukon has launched a voter registration campaign aimed at ensuring every eligible Yukoner is prepared for an election when it’s called.
The campaign encourages Yukoners to visit its secure online voter registration portal, to confirm, update, or add their information to the list of electors. The streamlined online registration process makes registering “easier than ever,” Elections Yukon said Friday.
More than 32,500 Yukoners are registered to vote. Elections Yukon estimates there are up to 3,000 additional electors who are not yet registered.
“With Yukon’s dynamic population growth and movement, many eligible electors may not be registered or their registration information may be out of date,” Elections Yukon said. “It is important Yukoners check their information to confirm it is accurate and up-to-date. Updating your information now will help ensure a smoother process when the next election arrives.”
Both territorial and federal elections are anticipated in 2025.
Canadian citizens who are 16 and 17 years old can pre-register as future electors. This would include anyone born before June 2008. Pre-registering as a future voter ensures youth are ready to vote when they turn 18.
Elections Yukon’s secure, user-friendly voter registration portal can be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection at ElectionsYukon.ca/registration, with the goal of making it convenient for all Yukoners to participate in the democratic process.
Yukoners can use the voter registration portal to quickly and securely confirm, update, or add their information to the list of electors.
“Since the last general election, in 2021, the Yukon has seen significant population growth and movement,” said Max Harvey, the chief electoral officer.
“I encourage all eligible electors and future electors in the Yukon to check, update, or add their information to the list of electors. Whether for a byelection or the next general election in 2025, we want to give Yukoners the best possible voting experience. Having up-to-date information helps facilitate a seamless, inclusive, and efficient voting experience for all Yukoners.”
The statutory date for the next territorial election is Nov. 3, 2025. An election could be called sooner.
Following the 2016 general election, Elections Yukon established a permanent register of electors for territorial elections and byelections. The permanent register replaced the requirement for territory-wide enumeration.
Any Canadian citizen who is at least 16 years old and has lived in the territory for at least 12 months can be added to the register.
Shortly after an election is called, voter information cards are mailed to every elector on the list of electors. The cards provide important information about where, when, and the many ways to vote.
This month, Yukoners will see advertising promoting voter registration, including bilingual voter registration cards sent to their home address. All advertising includes a QR code that links to the Elections Yukon registration page: ElectionsYukon.ca/registration.
Voters can also register by mail using a paper application. Electors can download it from ElectionsYukon.ca or request a copy by calling 1-866-668-8683.
