The Yukon Star launches podcast series

Today, The Yukon Star launched a weekly local news podcast.

The Yukon Star Podcast features discussions with editor Jim Butler and news staff. With host Ben Charland, the series looks beneath the stories in the print edition of The Yukon Star and asks about the larger forces at play and how they all tie together.

Episode 1, released today, features an in-depth conversation with Butler and staff writer T.S. Giilck about the August 9 print edition of The Yukon Star. Among other articles, they cover Dr. David Storey’s alarming letter to the editor about our hospital, housing prices in Whitehorse, and the unfolding Victoria Gold disaster.

Charland also produces the series. A Whitehorse-based writer and communications consultant, he gained accolades for his popular podcast, What on Earth is Going on? The show ran 101 episodes of long-form, in-person interviews with experts, and was broadcast on radio stations across Canada.

Charland is thrilled about the new venture. “This is a Yukon first,” he says. “The first weekly Yukon podcast that focuses on local news, local politics and local events. We’re talking to the people who cover, report and interpret the news, who think and write about the local context every day. Jim and his writers have decades of experience as journalists. It’s exciting to sit down with them for real dialogues about what’s going on in our community.”

New episodes will be released weekly, every Friday morning. The Yukon Star Podcast is available on all platforms and can be easily found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever else Yukoners listen to podcasts. Listeners can also visit The Yukon Star website for all episodes, show notes, transcripts, and further information.
