Teslin-area collision kills two women

Two people are dead and three more are injured after a collision early Wednesday afternoon on the Alaska Highway near Johnson’s Crossing.

Yukon chief coroner Heather Jones said this afternoon that at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Teslin RCMP responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision between an SUV and a truck with a fifth-wheel trailer on the Alaska Highway near Squanga Lake.

“Two adult female occupants from Yukon were ejected from the SUV and found to be deceased,” Jones said.

“One other injured adult from the SUV and two American citizens from the truck were transported by Emergency Medical Services to Whitehorse General Hospital.”

The Coroner’s Service has determined the identities of the deceased are 43-year-old Martina Marie Sidney (Baker) and 44-year-old Berdina Dorothy Hager. Both women were residents of Teslin.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that speed may have been a factor in this tragic incident,” Jones said.

The highway was closed to traffic, and opened to one lane at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The Coroner’s Service and Teslin RCMP detachment continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the deaths.

“Condolences are offered to the families and friends of Martina and Berdina and the community of Teslin,” the Coroner’s Service said.
