Sport court to hear Canada’s appeal in soccer case

(CP) – A sports tribunal will hear an appeal today about the point deduction the Canadian women’s soccer team was handed.

The appeal was filed by the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer days after a member of its coaching staff was caught spying on New Zealand’s practices with a drone before the Games began in Paris.

FIFA came down hard on the program over the weekend. Six points were docked from the team, Canada Soccer was fined and three coaches — including head coach Bev Priestman — were suspended for one year.

A decision in the appeal case was expected before Canada closes out Group A play Wednesday night against Colombia in Nice.

The Canadian women’s soccer assistant coach Jasmine Mander and Canada Soccer analyst Joseph Lombardi have been removed from the Canadian Olympic team and sent home after two drone incidents at the Paris Games.

The COC also accepted the decision of head coach Bev Priestman to remove herself from coaching the team.

The committee statement came after a review of a drone incident in Saint-Etienne, France on Monday and a second drone incident at a New Zealand practice last Friday. The COC also said that Canada Soccer staff will undergo mandatory ethics training.
