South Klondike Highway reopens to two-lane traffic

More than a week after a massive landslide closed the South Klondike Highway near the Conrad campground, the road has returned to two-lane traffic.

A representative from the Department of Highways and Public Works posted the news on social media Wednesday evening.

“Thanks to the incredible hard work of our crews, the South Klondike Highway is now fully open to two lanes. However, there is still much work to be done, so piloting will still occur while crews are at work,” the post read.

“We estimate it will take 4,500 dump truck loads to remove all the debris!”

The landslide occurred July 23. It had initially left approximately 200 tourists from Skagway stranded on the Yukon side of the highway, but innovative measures by tourist operators and officials soon took care of the problem.

For several days, the highway had been open to one-lane alternating traffic.
