The second annual Marsh Lake Triathlon took place Saturday.
The race began at the Marsh Lake Marina and ended at the Marsh Lake Community Centre.
It started with an approximately 6.5 km-paddling portion, followed by a 30-km biking portion and a 9.5-km running portion.
A rainy day did not dampen the spirits of the competitors. Twenty people took part in the race. The registration fee was $50 for solo participants and $75 per team.
Prizes were handed out, including best costume and most supportive support team.
One of the race organizers, Alison Landaffe, emailed The Yukon Star with her thoughts on the race, saying it went well overall.
“We had a last-minute switch in the race route because we had north winds on the lake for the paddling section and it would have made that part very difficult if we went with the direction we originally planned (Marina to Nolan),” Landaffe said.
“Everyone was very understanding and thankful that we made the switch. From there, the rest of the race was smooth sailing. A little wet for the bike ride, but everyone seemed in good spirits.”
Landaffe said what stood out for her was how supportive everyone was of each other.
“Everyone went to the finish line to meet the last racer and cheered so enthusiastically. It was just great.
“I would also have to give a big shout-out to all the volunteers. They were fantastic working in the rain and encouraging participants.
“As well as the Marsh Lake Community Centre and the marina for working with us to organize this event.”
Landaffe said it seemed like the participants enjoyed themselves.
“We got good feedback right away that the event was really fun. A lot of people came over and told us that they really liked the paddling portion of the event, instead of a traditional triathlon swimming portion.”
Landaffe said the athletes also really enjoyed bands playing music at the end of the race at the community centre. A post-race barbecue was also held at the centre.
She added a thank you for everyone who came out and supported the event, and said she hoped to see everyone out there next year, with even more participants.
