Premier recognizes territory’s birthday

The Yukon turned 126 years old as a territory Thursday, and Premier Ranj Pillai marked the occasion with a statement.

“It was June 13, 1898, that the land on which we are fortunate to live separated from the Northwest Territories and joined Confederation as the Yukon Territory. While this was a significant step in our journey as a maturing jurisdiction, it is crucial to recognize and honour the enduring presence of Yukon First Nations who have inhabited this land since time immemorial,” the premier said.

“The Government of Yukon is deeply committed to strong working relationships with First Nations. We are listening to and working with Indigenous governments and groups to address the harms that have been caused by a long history of inequality and discrimination.”

Current and future Yukoners must ensure that “the next 125 years and beyond tells a very different story for everyone who lives here,” the premier added.

“Together, let’s all play a part in creating an inclusive society and a safe, thriving Yukon for future generations.”
