A small fire near F.H. Collins Secondary School over Tuesday’s lunch hour was extinguished without incident.
According to the Department of Education, the blaze occurred in the forested area just off of the school grounds at around 12:15 pm.
“We understand that staff acted quickly, and the fire department was contacted immediately,” the department advised The Yukon Star this morning.
“The City of Whitehorse fire department attended the scene and put out the fire. As many students were outside for lunch and participating in a multi-school track meet, the principal contacted students’ families by email to let them know what occurred and that students may discuss the situation with them at home.”
Students were kept safe, and there were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Matthew Cameron, the city’s manager of strategic communications, provided a one-line comment on the fire on behalf of the fire department: “Crews responded quickly and put the fire out.”
