Man arrested following theft of vehicle

Whitehorse RCMP have arrested a local man found driving a vehicle that had been stolen last Wednesday evening from the compound of Capital Towing Services Ltd. in Marwell.

In addition to the two vehicles police had reported stolen last week, officers learned that two other vehicles had also been taken from the Gypsum Road compound, including a red Nissan Pathfinder.

Three of the stolen vehicles were located abandoned, while a red Nissan Pathfinder was located by police.

Last Friday afternoon, an officer saw the Pathfinder in the downtown core. Members of the Crime Reduction Unit, General Investigative Service, Emergency Response Team and the Police Dog Service were summoned to assist in the investigation.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as Shaun Brackenbury, 30, a resident of Whitehorse.

“Mr. Brackenbury was apprehended and arrested on Range Road by police and charged with operating a motor vehicle while prohibited from doing so, as well as for two counts of breach of probation,” police said Tuesday afternoon.

“Additional charges include possession of property obtained by crime and willfully obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty.”

At the time of the arrest, police alerted the public that many officers were working in the Range Road vicinity.

Brackenbury was held in custody for a court appearance on Monday. He was subsequently released on a court order with conditions and a court appearance of July 31.

“Police would like to thank the public for the tips and information they have provided to date,” the RCMP said.

They said they continue to investigate other reported crimes, including a series of downtown business break-ins, and encourage anyone with information about a crime to contact them at 667-5555.
