The territorial Department of the Environment has cleaned up a weekend fuel spill along Wann Road in Porter Creek.
Last Sunday afternoon, Environment officials received a report of a diesel spill on Wann Road. The Whitehorse Fire Department, RCMP and Environment officials were on the scene Monday “to confine and clean up the spill,” communications analyst Simon Kishchuk said Tuesday.
“The quick response from the emergency agencies led to the spill being contained successfully. Environment officials are currently working to identify a responsible party,” Kishchuk said.
Anyone who saw the spill occur or has any information is asked to contact the Yukon Spills Line at 667-7244. The line is monitored 24/7.
“The Department of Environment reminds anyone in control of a substance at the time of a spill or who causes a spill, you must report it as soon as possible,” Kishchuk said.
“Anyone who becomes aware of a spill is encouraged to report it to the Yukon Spill Line. Anyone responsible for a spill is legally obligated to take all reasonable measures to confine, repair and remedy the effects of the spill, and remove the substance spilled to reduce the danger to human health and the environment.”
A person on Facebook on Sunday was appealing for witnesses to the spill. He reported the site of the spill as Wann Road at Redwood Street between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
“If you (saw) a fuel truck, transport truck or maybe a truck lose a bunch of diesel on Wann Road, then pull over to try and fix the problem but drove off still leaking fluid down the Alaska Highway toward Whitehorse … report any information you may have to RCMP because clearly they knew something messed up,” the person said. “They pulled over in front of Whiskey Jacks and tried to fix it and drove off knowing they caused a huge spill.”
