As the wildfire situation eases somewhat, an evacuation alert for Mayo and the Nacho Nyäk Dun region of central Yukon has been lifted.
“The evacuation alert issued on June 29 has been rescinded,” Yukon Wildland Fire Management said today.
“There are no evacuation alerts remaining in place for the areas listed above. The risk from the Roaring Fork fire (MA-021) has diminished due to reduced fire weather, rainfall and containment achieved by wildland fire crews.”
The alert covered the Village of Mayo, First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun C-6 Subdivision, Keno City, km 28 to 108 on the Silver Trail, Duncan Creek Road and Minto Lake Road.
“Less severe weather continues to allow wildfire crews to work more directly on active fires. A level 2 fire restriction is in place for the Beaver Creek, Haines Junction, Carmacks, Ross River, Dawson, Mayo and Old Crow fire management districts.”
“The Wrong Lake fire (MA-006) is burning near the North Klondike Highway between Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. An evacuation alert is in place for Stewart Crossing. Check Yukon 511 to see the latest highway information.”
The highway reopened earlier this week after having been closed June 21, though sporadic pilot vehicle escorts had been available during that period.
“Yukon is receiving the following help through the Northwest Compact: 12x initial-attack crews, 1x air-tanker group, 1x aviation assistant, 3x incident commanders, and 1x information officer from British Columbia; 1x ignition specialist trainee from Oregon,” Wildfire Management said.
