Dumping of fast food investigated

Yukon conservation officers are investigating after a smorgasbord of fast food was left on the Scout Lake Road near the Old Alaska Highway west of Whitehorse.

The food was first reported on social media over the Victoria Day weekend.

Then conservation officers received a report on May 19 of a large amount of rotisserie chickens, chicken nuggets and French fries discarded in the bush in that area.

Government officials say officers have since cleaned up the site.

Linea Volkering, a spokesperson for conservation services, says, “If you’re in the area, officers recommend leashing up your dogs, carrying bear spray and being alert, as wildlife may be in the area in search of the smell.”

“Right now, we are in shoulder season where bears and other animals have limited food sources. Leaving food out – or in this case, dumping it – can cause wildlife to feed on unnatural food sources and encourage them to seek similar opportunities, eventually bringing them into conflict.”

Volkering added, “This incident is under investigation. If anyone has additional information, please contact the 24-hour TIPP line at 1-800-661-0525 or online at Yukon.ca/TIPP.”
