Yukon conservation officers believe there is no problem with a pack of aggressive coyotes in the Ice Lake area – despite a report on social media last week.
In the post, the incident was described as follows: “Just followed very closely with my dog walking group by a group of sizable, bold coyotes the entire way around the Ice Lake loop. If you’ve got smaller breed dogs, I would keep them on a long line, or keep them on trails a bit closer to home for the time being.”
Communications analyst Mara De La Rosa told The Yukon Star on Tuesday, “I can confirm that the Conservation Officer Services branch has not received any TIPP reports of aggressive coyotes near the Ice Lake Road area.
“Conservation officers are aware that coyotes have been spotted around the trails behind the Copper Ridge, Granger and Arkell area; however, no reports of aggressive behaviour have been received.”
De La Rosa added that serious conflicts between people and urban wildlife (foxes, coyotes or wolves) are rare.
“Left to their natural ways, these animals pose little risk to people,” she said. “To report aggressive urban wildlife, we encourage you to call the TIPP line at 1-800-661-0525.
“Coyotes are most dangerous when they come to rely on people or populated urban areas for food,” she added.
“Food left outside for pets is an easily preventable lure, and unmonitored pets can draw in a coyote and be attacked.”
If you suspect someone is feeding wildlife, call the TIPP line.
