With some high-profile candidates already pulling out of October’s municipal election, Whitehorse city councillor Kirk Cameron is mulling a run for mayor.
“I am definitely thinking about it,” Cameron told The Yukon Star late this morning.
Incumbent Laura Cabott announced last Wednesday she will not seek a second term as mayor. Coun. Ted Laking, who had been a potential candidate to challenge for the position, has also announced he is not running for municipal office again.
Cameron has multiple councillor terms to his credit. He is a former Yukon government bureaucrat, having advanced to being a deputy minister before retiring.
He told the Star he is finding himself in what he calls a “sweet spot” being semi-retired, between the ages of 65 and 70, and still in good health.
Born and raised in Whitehorse, he said he wants to “reach out to the community.
“We have a lot of challenges,” he said. “We have things to do that’s going to cost a lot of money.”
As he ponders his decision, Cameron said he is consulting with his friends and family members before finalizing his choice.
He said he expects to make an announcement by next Wednesday.
