Bell creates complaint line – but won’t tell Yukoners about it

If you have a complaint about wireless service in the Yukon, Bell Canada wants to hear about it … but it’s not going to tell you that.

In response to the latest letter of complaints sent to Bell Canada by Premier Ranj Pillai, Bell has provided the Yukon government with a phone number (1-888-883-0966) for Yukoners “fed up with months of dropped calls, spotty service, and intermittent outages.”

In a prepared statement provided by cabinet communications staff, the following information was relayed: “Bell executives told us that the Government of Yukon should distribute this number to Yukoners, but said that Bell would not be proactively reaching out to Yukoners to inform them of this resource.

“While Bell Canada executives assured us that they are aware of Yukoners’ concerns about shoddy cell phone service, and they are telling us that work is underway to address our collective concerns, when we called the number that was provided, the person answering the phone was unable to help us – and did not appear to know about the situation here in the Yukon.”

The cabinet statement added “executives did not respond to the premier’s request in his letter to provide financial compensation for Yukoners who are experiencing issues with cell phone service but continue to pay full price for these services.”

The statement concluded with the government representatives saying “corporate leadership at Bell continues to ignore the needs of Yukoners, and Yukoners deserve better.

“We encourage Yukoners to report concerns about cell phone service to the CRTC at 1-877-249-2782 or online at https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/contact/question.htm.”

As The Yukon Star reported Tuesday, Pillai has told the Montreal-based company the constant dropped calls and service interruptions are negatively impacting communications within the health care system and wildfire fighting operations.
