Battery project is charging ahead

Yukon Energy’s installation of a massive grid battery complex on the edge of downtown Whitehorse is exhibiting plenty of juice.

In a recent social media post, the company stated “the battery containers have started to arrive! The batteries will be housed in these containers, which will have interior climate controls and are designed to work in our extreme climate.

“We expect to receive the remaining containers in mid-August, after which we’ll start installing the batteries themselves and the climate system.”

The battery project is located off Robert Service Way.

Once complete, the publicly owned corporation added, “the battery will help to reduce peak demand in the winter and stabilize our system. We expect construction for the battery to be complete by the end of this year.”

The company added the project is expected to cost $35 million. Of that, $16.5 million will be covered by the federal government’s Green Infrastructure Stream. Yukon Energy will invest the remaining $18.5 million.

“An application to include our investment in rates will be submitted to the Yukon Utilities Board after the battery is installed and operational.”
