The new rates look a lot like the old rates.
More than a month after the Yukon Utilities Board wrangled with ATCO Electric Yukon over its proposal for revised rates for its Yukon customers, the board has made its decision. What it allows for doesn’t seem to be much different than the current rates.
After several requests, officials from ATCO provided a statement to The Yukon Star last Thursday.
“Though final rates have yet to be approved, AEY has submitted rates in our compliance filing that reflect the YUB’s decisions,” the company said.
“A typical residential customer will see an increase of 1.7 per cent effective Sept. 1, 2024 and a further increase of 0.8 per cent effective Sept. 1, 2025. A typical business will see an increase of 1.5 per cent effective September 1, 2024 and a further increase of 0.7 per cent effective September 1, 2025.”
Utilities rates, set and approved by the YUB, “are designed to recover the costs incurred by the utility to build, operate and maintain a safe electrical system, deliver power to customers in all conditions, and deliver accurate and timely billing services,” ATCO added.
“The demand for electricity throughout the Yukon is increasing and so is the age of a lot of the existing electrical infrastructure. Our rates recover the costs to pay for building new lines to serve the increasing needs of customers and maintaining and upgrading aging infrastructure.”
The board declined to provide any comment.
