Are we doing enough to welcome newcomers?
Another Canada Day is behind us.
As a parade participant this year, I enjoyed seeing the smiling faces all around the parade route.
Young children waving the maple leaf, families, and our older population were all there to celebrate the day and reflect on what it means to live in Canada.
It was impossible to miss the delightful representation of a multitude of nationalities who have chosen Whitehorse as home. Some were in the parade, and others were spectators.
Many people commented positively on how our capital city’s diversity has changed.
Given this change, I wonder if the collective “we” adequately reflect our newcomers’ attributes and opinions through the media, our many organizations and government planning.
For example, do we hear their voices, music, stories and ideas portrayed?
Are we doing enough to provide a balance and be the welcoming, inclusive territory we say we are?
