Copperbelt Classic Charity Golf Tournament raises a record $45,000

The Copperbelt Classic Society Charity Golf Tournament generated an unprecedented $45,000 this year.

The money was raised to benefit the Yukon T1D Support Network and LDAY Centre for Learning. According to a press release, each organization will receive $22,500.

Seventy golfers participated in the annual tournament, held June 7 at the Meadow Lakes Golf Club.

Special guest Tim Hunter, a former Calgary Flames right winger and 1989 Stanley Cup champion, golfed with the Nuway Crushing team and spoke over dinner about his love of the Yukon and the importance of community.

Scott Kent co-founded and organizes the tournament with his wife, Amanda Leslie.

“The weather couldn’t have been better, and when we can come together to support Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes and learners with differences, it makes for a pretty great day,” Kent said.

The event featured live and silent auctions. The live auction, which included signed hockey jerseys from Hunter and Gavin McKenna and a signed hockey stick from Dylan Cozens, raised $14,200.

Yukon T1D Support Network president Marney Paradis said, “The funds raised through this event will go directly to the purchase of HbA1C machines for use in Whitehorse clinics. These machines help persons living with Type 1 diabetes have point-of-care access to their three-month glucose readings, reducing the need for blood draws at the hospital.

“This event helps people living with Type 1 diabetes, helps reduce the strain on the hospital and ultimately saves taxpayers money.”

“So many Yukon students and families will benefit greatly from the programming these funds enable us to offer,” said Stephanie Hammond, the LDAY Centre for Learning’s executive director.

“We will be able to support struggling learners through summer literacy tutoring in Whitehorse and literacy summer camp in Dawson City, and we know that these experiences can help to change the trajectory of success in school for children.”

The tournament also continued to honour the memory of Travis Adams, who died in a tragic traffic accident in 2020 near Marsh Lake.

“Thanks to my brother Travis’ foresight and commitment to our community in coming on board as this tournament’s key sponsor from the very beginning, Yukoners continue to benefit,” said tournament ambassador Jason Adams.

“So many of his dear friends play in this tournament each year, and we are so honoured to pause and recognize his life, his generosity and his love of the Calgary Flames.”

Next year’s tournament will be held once again at the Meadow Lakes Golf Club on June 6, 2025.
